Sexual Diversity & Gender Identity

In October 1976, the Association’s Council adopted the following statement on discrimination (revised in 1994 and 1995):

The Association is committed to use its procedures and to take measures, including censure, against colleges and universities practicing illegal or unconstitutional discrimination, or discrimination on a basis not demonstrably related to the job function involved, including, but not limited to, age, sex, disability, race, religion, national origin, marital status, or sexual orientation.

Because of continuing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, the Association has established a standing committee to deal specifically with the issue, the Committee on Sexual Diversity and Gender Identity. The function of the committee is to research and monitor discrimination based on sexual orientation and to educate members of the higher education community and the public on issues relating to sexual diversity and gender identity.  The SDGI committee works with other Association committees (government relations, governance, and Committee A, for example) to promote fair and inclusive policies on these matters on campuses and in the legislatures.
